Beautiful Bottles: Herve Souhaut, St. Joseph 2011

Herve Souhaut created the domaine Romaneaux-Destezet in 1993 with an eye towards crafting utterly pure, focused, expressions of northern Rhone terroir.  Working naturally on 5 hectares with some parcels of gamay and syrah vines reaching over 100 years old.  The wines are vinified with whole-clusters, without sulphur in large, old wooden vats and aged in small, used barrels. The resulting wines have incredible freshness and intensity with a supple, drinkable texture. The 2011 St. Joseph offers a unique and vibrant expression of this classic Syrah appellation.  Sporting intensely high toned fruit with that unmistakable gamey, gnarly, bacon-y goodenss balanced by crisp acidity, fine tannins, and clean minerality, this wine delivers remarkably clear, compelling flavors. For folks who are looking for classic northern Rhone that speaks with a clear, individual voice, this is simply a stunning, memorable bottle of wine.
