Flatiron's Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide

Welcome to our Holiday 2019 Gift Guide! Our goal is to alleviate some of the stress that holiday wine gifts can bring. Hopefully you can have some fun while choosing the perfect bottle for everyone on your list. We've got these lists split into three categories: Gifts for the Wine Geek, Gifts for the New (but interested!) Wine Drinker, and--my personal favorite--stocking stuffers.

You'll notice that our choices are split up by NYC and SF shops. If you live close to a local shop, feel free to lean on that coast. If you are planning on shipping your gifts across the country, feel free to read the whole list. Just note that if you buy from both coasts, that will mean separate websites, separate online shopping carts, and separate purchases entirely.

Happy Holidays and Happy Gifting!

Gifts for the Wine Geek

It can be especially tricky to track down gifts for the wine geeks in our life. What to get the people that never seem to be satisfied! Here are our favorite options.

New York:

The Durand: When someone is regularly opening vintage bottles of wine, the Durand is a thoughtful and endlessly useful gift.

According to their site: The Durand™ is a broadly patented device that is exceptionally effective in removing compromised and fragile corks, whole and intact, from older, valued wines. The Durand has been repeatedly tested on the most challenging corks. It has performed consistently and flawlessly.

Chateau Yvonne's Saumur Champigny, "La Folie" 2018: Chateau Yvonne is one of our favorite winemakers and the 2018 vintage in the Loire is nearly unbeatable.

This wine is serious thanks to hard limestone soils and aging in wood (half large casks, half 4-5 year-old barrels). You can chill and drink for casual pleasure, but this is also a wine that you can dress up when the occasion demands elegance and complexity. The flexibility and impeccable quality make it a great gift for the geek in your life!

Christian Tschida, Himmel Auf Erden II Maischevergoren, 2017: Tschida is a hip, committed wine maker. This wine is subtly orange and has exotic aromatics. The wine is totally dialed in, and is perfectly grippy. Whoever receives this gift will be appropriately impressed by your pick!

Peter Wetzer, Kékfrankos, "Spern Steiner", 2016: This is pretty serious and completely age-worthy. Think Côte-Rotie made from Blaufränkisch. Tight and floral with a bright acid, blueberry fruit and a grippy finish of black pepper and thyme and stone. You'll be begging them to go ahead and open up this bottle and share it with you over burgers (or a lamb roast).

MagnumsWhat could possibly beat a bottle of wine? Maybe, a really big bottle! If you're trying to find a gift for someone who really loves wine, try buying a magnum! We have a massive magnum collection right now including '78 Cantenac Brown and '08 Larmandier-Bernier Grand Cru Champagne.

Domaine Pelle, Menetou-Salon Morogues Blanchais, 2017: You've probably heard us sing the praises of Menetou-Salon's Domaine Pelle before. From right outside of Sancerre, Menetou-Salon is just geeky enough, but totally traditional in style.

Blanchais is Pelle's top wine, and it is a real killer. It comes from a plot of 50 year-old vines on Kimmeridgian marl, vinified in a combination of various wood formats and stainless steel. This has salinity and depth for days. With a bit of time to open up, this wine is a total show stopper.

Willi Schaefer, Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese, 2017: Riesling is a no-brainer. The ultimate winter white. Willi is a no brainer too. An ultimate Riesling producer. So, when picking gifting wines, we had to include one of our favorites of 2017--this wine! With spicy Chinese food or on it's own, this wine is a stunning choice.

Fine and Rare: Last, but CERTAINLY not least...Our fine and rare collection is the ideal place to shop for the Wine Geek in your life. Including the '02 Leroy from the photo, we have dozens (if not hundreds) of incredible one-of-a-kind wines in stock and available on the site.

If you need any help navigating our collection, you can always call our shop at (212) 477-1315. Or, if you're in the neighborhood, stop by!

Richard Brendon, Jancis Robinson Wine Glass (6-pack): One wine glass to rule them all! These glasses are not only incredibly elegant--they are perfect for tasting wines. They are made to be a single glass for all wines. So, you can say goodbye to your Burgundy glasses, your white wine glasses, your Bordeaux glasses and Champagne flutes! This is the perfect gift for the experienced wine drinker in your life. They'll know you really found them something special because these glasses will revolutionize every sip.

San Francisco:

Domaine Sylvain Pataille, Marsannay Rose, 2017: Sylvain is very passionate, devoted and somewhat geeky about making amazing and serious wine from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Aligote in Marsannay. This Rosé is polished, has loads of depth and complexity and is truly made for aging, we generally like it best with five or more years of age. The age-ability, teamed with the depth and complexity make this a great gift for your tough to buy for Secret Santa.

David Leclapart, Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut L'Apotre, 2006: As a true believer in biodynamics, this 4th generation Champagne grower makes his Chardonnay in an elegant and beautifully oxidative style. Truly a geeky and delicious bottle of Champagne. A perfect gift, unquestionably.

Young Inglewood, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014: Young Inglewood is a very small and thoughtful producer of wine in St. Helena neighboring Corison. They are true believers in sustainability and making wine that is well balanced. The 2014 Estate cab is intensely aromatic, with a heady mix of molasses, dark chocolate and tar. This is a spectacular gift for someone who wants a balanced and eye-opening Cali Cab.

Gabriel-Glas, Gold Edition: A beautiful hand blown all purpose glass. This glass is the weight of a feather and is designed to enhance all wine from Champagne to Burgundy to Barolo.

For delivery within CA State ONLY:

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot ship spirits accross state lines. The following gifts are for shipment only within CA State.

Barrell, Flatiron Wines and Spirits, Single Barrel Bourbon 14 Year: If you don't know Barrell, you should! I'm flattered to be the one to introduce you. They're a tiny company—with just 9 employees—that's become a cult hit with spirits connoisseurs. This bourbon is incredibly well-balanced and extremely complex. A perfect spirit gift for the wine-drinker in your life.

Gifts for the New (but interested!) Wine Drinker

Perhaps you are wine-obsessed and you're passing on the bug. Or maybe someone in your life totally loves wine but doesn't quite have the time (or cash) to turn full-geek (yet!). Either way, here are some treats that you will love sharing and that will be approachable, but still refined and delicious.

New York:

Gift Card For a Class: Our education program provides an opportunity for individuals at all levels of experience to explore wine in a friendly, relaxed and stimulating environment. Taught by leading professionals from across the NYC wine industry, and beyond, our classes cover a broad range of topics. The only prerequisite is a desire to taste, learn and enjoy! So, by gifting a gift card you'll be giving an opportunity to dive a bit deeper into the wine world!

What Makes a Wine Worth Drinking, Terry Theise: No one writes about wine with as much love and care as our good friend Terry Theise. If you know someone who is just getting into wine, chances are they are reading and tasting everything they can get their hands on. This book is perfect to put in their hands. This is a no-ego piece about wine that reminded all of us of why we caught the wine bug in the first place.

Domaine Christian Moreau, Chablis Vaillon Cuvee Guy Moreau 1er Cru, 2017: What isn't to love about this wine! '17 Chablis are electric. This is a very special wine from an incredible producer. We featured Christian Moreau as one of our Top Ten Burgundy Producers (that you can actually buy). He has all the glam of a famous name in Chablis, and this wine can totally back it up. If you are looking for a gift less than $100 that drinks above price--this is a great pick.

Selbach-Oster, Riesling Trocken Zeltinger Sonnenuhr***, 2016*: We've already said this once, but nothing can beat a glass of Riesling during the holidays. This wine is classic, bone dry, crisp and mouth-watering. It's like biting into a perfectly ripe Harry and David pear. If your giftee is a bit picky about Riesling, this is the perfect bottle to set them straight!

Louis Roederer, Champagne Brut Nature (Philippe Stark Label), 2009: Everything about this wine is giftable. Roederer is one of the most well-known and respected houses in Champagne. This is a vintage bottle. And the label is totally festive, and totally to die for. If you gift this bottle, you'll be the envy of all the other Secret Santas. We had a tasting in the store a few weeks ago and this bottle knocked us back. It can age for another decade, but it's already drinking so well.

Champagne Stopper: We don't know about you, but I'm always looking for solutions to keep my wine fresh. People swear by vacuum sealers, or keeping it in the fridge. But, nothing works for Champagne like this. It's specifically made for trapping the gas and pressure to keep the bubbles...well, bubbly! This is an essential for anyone who wants to have a glass of bubbles here and there.

Chateau Massereau, Cuvee K Bordeaux Superieur, 2008: There are a few bottles that here in the shop we all can unanimously point to as a tried and true favorite. This is undeniably one of them. Massereau is a terrific producer, whose wines have impressed us for several vintages. But they've captured magic in a bottle with their Cuvee K. You won't find a better wine with this much age for this price point. For less than $30 you'll be giving a gift that drinks far above the price.

Oddero, Barolo, Villero, 2015: When I was first falling in love with wine, very few wines seemed as austere, as luxe, as unreachable as Barolo. With a decant (or some time to open up) this wine becomes approachable, true to style, expressive and terroir-specific. It will make the illusive Piedmont region come alive in the glass and by the time they reach the end of the bottle--they'll be totally hooked. With this you're not just gifting a wine bottle, you're gifting them the start of a new wine journey!

Domaine Dominique Gruhier, Bourgogne Epineuil Rouge, 2017: This wine is lifted, light and bright. If you aren't totally sure what style of wine your giftee likes, this is a great choice. Dark, crunchy fruit. Smooth, silky tannin. This is one of those wines that just makes you happy. It enlightens the palette, rather than wearing it out. If you're going to gather the family around a bottle over the holiday--it should be this one.

San Francisco:

Champagne Duc de Romet, Brut "Prestige", NV: Though not technically a Grower Champagne, this Champagne comes to us from a cooperative project. The Co-op features some of our favorite growers in the Terry Theise portfolio (plus a few other talented folks) working together to produce a very high quality Champagne at a terrific price. Most of the famous labels are now well above $50, so if you want to share what makes true Champagne special, this is the smartest place to start.

A Tribute to Grace, Santa Barbera Grenache, 2017: If you want to show a friend what is going on in the world of California wine then this is a great place to start. Angela Osborne fell in love with Grenache early in her wine life, and has been striving to achieve the most elegant and elevated expression possible since 2006. This is definitely "New Califorina": small production, sustainably sourced vineyards and a focus on structure and balance. This is a great gift to broaden someone's perception of domestic wines.

Gotsa, Chinuri Petillant Natural, 2016: Do you have a good friend or family member who always seems to be ahead of the curve? They know the trends, the hip spots and the coolest albums. Maybe they've been buzzing about "Natural Wine". Wines that are made without additives and minimal human intervention are all the rage and the Gotsa hits several of the most recent trends. It's from the Republic of Georgia. And, it is a "Pet Nat" (ancient method of making sparkling wine, updated for current consumption) made without adding anything . . . just grapes!

Domaine Charvin, Cotes-du-Rhone "Poutet", 2017: Sometimes you just need a great little bottle of red wine that will satisfy all types of people, with all levels of wine knowledge and interest. Our pick is a perennial Flatiron favorite, the "Poutet" from Charvin. Charvin is fantastic producer in Chateauneuf du Pape, and his entry level wine is no basic Cotes-du-Rhone. This is elegant, richly layered and well balanced wine. Grenache dominant, with lots of ripe, forest berry fruit and wild herbs it is a versatile wine for all occasions! A perfect gift for that tricky Uncle or for the host who has everything.

Flatiron SF Seminar Series Gift Card: This gift card will cover any our entry level wine seminars. Intimate, guided tastings in our downstairs tasting room. 20 people get together to taste and discuss different regions, grapes and styles of winemaking. Guided by our expert staff or guests like winemakers and sommeliers, you can choose from a wide range of topics and themes presented throughout the coming year.

Stocking Stuffers

New York:

Stocking stuffers are by far the most fun gifts of the season. All the things that show you care, but slightly cuter! Here are some of the small format bottles that we just can't shut up about.

Ramona, Ruby Red Grapefruit Wine Spritz (250ml): We will never stop singing Ramona's praises. When we first brought in these cans over the summer, our staff was OBSESSED. They quickly became our go-to drinks for all staff outings and get togethers.

Ramona takes organic Italian wine and adds organic fruit juice creating a delicious wine spritz. This is the perfect little treat to crack open while unwrapping gifts and I'd be absolutely thrilled to find it in my stocking!

Domaine Faiveley, Mercurey Blanc, 2014 (375ml): All the glitz and glamour of white Burgundy in an adorable Faiveley package. Pretty unbeatable. This is a perfect stocking stuffer for people who love the elegance and power of french Chardonnay, but wouldn't necessarily  treat themselves to opening a bottle on a Wednesday night. Now they'll be able to have just a glass (or two) and treat themselves.

Marc Hebrart, Champagne Brut 'Selection', NV (375ml): Half bottles of Champagne are one of the great joys of life. There's nothing quite like popping open a decadent bottle of bubbles and knowing that you'll be able to finish the whole thing! No guilt! No half-still leftovers. Just delicious Champagne in your glass!

Baron de Brane, Margaux, 2016 (375ml): This is a bottle we love and recommend in 750, and it will be even better to drink now in 375. Elegant, Dark Fruited, and Full bodied. This is the ultimate gift (at an unbeatable price) for red wine lovers. If you aren't sure what they like, you often can't go wrong with terrific Bordeaux. Baron de Brane is no exception.

Bisol, Prosecco Superiore "Jeio" DOCG, NV (187ml): When even a half bottle is too much, these QUARTER bottles of prosecco are here for you! They are as yummy as they are adorable (which is to say: very). And if you're looking to fill out a stocking or another gift, this is a great little add-on to bring it all together.

Twin Prong Bottle Opener (Ah-So): Another great accessory that often people don't think of to buy themselves! This two prong bottle opener, called an Ah-So, is used by sliding the prongs on either side of a tricky cork. If you're in the need of one extra little wine gift, or if you know someone who is always shredding their corks--this gift is simple and useful! Tack it on to a bottle you're gifting!

For shipping in NY STATE Only:

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot ship spirits accross state lines. The following gifts are for shipment only within NY State.

Clase Azul, Tequila Reposado (200ml): All the delicious power of the full sized bottle in one adorable (and visually impressive) package.

Eagle Rare, 10 Year Single Barrel (375ml):

50ml spiritsThis is the ultimate stocking stuffer. No question.

San Francisco:

Companion Wine Co. North Coast Malvasia 375ml: Surprise your loved ones with a summer sipper in the middle of winter. A quality wine served in a casual can made by Scott Schultz of Jolie-Laide. This floral white shows a touch of orange peel and dried stone fruits with a splash of minerality.
Luxardo Maraschino Cherries: Treat a budding bartender to their favorite garnish! Luxardo Maraschino cherries are candied and preserved in marasca cherry liqueur, which has a characteristic nutty flavor coming from the cherry pits and a four year fermentation process. They add instant sophistication to any Aviation, Last Word, or ice cream sundae.
Ruinart Brut Blanc de Blancs, NV 375ml: Ruinart is the oldest established Champagne house and remains a staff favorite. Its signature bottle shape is a tribute to the first champagne bottles of the 18th century and the half bottle size is irresistible! This wine is bright and fresh with loads of lemon zest and golden apples, but finishes with hints of classic Chardonnay brioche.
Chateau Roumieu-Lacoste Sauternes, 2016 375ml: Perfect for pairing with a cheese plate or a roaring fire, this is a classic example of Sauterne at an unbeatable value. Winemaker Herve Dubourdieu is meticulous in his methods, ensuring quality and consistency vintage after vintage. His resulting dessert wine is decadent without being overbearing, sweet but not too sweet, with notes of honey, apricot and peach.
