Mary Taylor works like an independent bottler of wines from the more obscure Old World appellations, and while Bordeaux isn't exactly obscure, independent vignerons like Jean Marc Barthez are often overshadowed by big, flashy châteaux. This velvety red is a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, completely unoaked, which allows a bursting acidity and graphite minerality to shine through. Drink it it slightly chilled with anything from a juicy rib-eye to earthy mushroom dishes to burgers off the grill.
Mary Taylor, Agenais Rosé Elaboré par Christophe Avi, 2024
Mary Taylor works like an independent bottler of wines from the more obscure Old World appellations — including this Agenais rosé. Agenais is located in Southwest France, typically home to bold reds made from Cabernet (Sauvignon and Franc) and Tannat. This delicate, zippy rosé is a lovely break from those big wines, with flavors of orange blossom, white raspberry, lime leaf, and a stony minerality. Winemaker Christophe Avi makes it from his younger vines, which are farmed carefully and without chemicals A perfect rosé to beat the heat of summer.
Azimut, Brut Nature Cava Rosé, 2022 $16.99 $14.44
Azimut is a project by the Suriol family, longtime organic growers in Penedès, Spain. Their Brut Nature Rosé blends Garnacha and Monastrell, crafted with native yeasts and zero dosage. It’s dry and lively, with bright red berries and a savory edge. A pure expression of traditional Cava made with minimal intervention.
Radley & Finch, Chenin Blanc "Alley Pack", 2024 $16.99 $14.44
Radley & Finch, a playful project by Thinus Krüger in South Africa’s Western Cape, crafts bright, honest wines. This Chenin Blanc comes from bush vines grown on decomposed granite, offering vibrant orchard fruit with a crisp, clean finish. Minimal intervention keeps it pure and lively. A fresh take on South Africa’s flagship white. Classically-styled Chenin Blanc is hard to beat, and this one is a screaming good deal.
Stolpman Vineyards, Love You Bunches Rosé, 2024
“Love You Bunches” is 100% Grenache, fermented and aged in stainless steel, bursting with flavors of ice cold and refreshing strawberries and watermelon. The “straw-melon” blast crescendos through the front and mid-palate with an extra layer of yum over the taut bone dry structure. The fruit is organically farmed, and it clocks in at a very reasonable 11.5%, so you can have an extra glass. Stolpman is an impressive, family-owned winery with a profit-sharing scheme for its employees — we love to see this kind of sustainability!
Francois Chidaine, Touraine Rouge, 2022
After taking over his family domaine in the late '80s, Chidaine quickly moved to organic and then biodynamic viticulture. He's known for outstanding Chenin Blanc, but we love his Touraine Rouge — an under-the-radar blend of Cabernet Franc, Côt (a.k.a. Malbec) and Pineau d'Aunis. It's spicy, with lots of red and black fruit, crunchy acidity and a sleek, silky texture. Cab Franc brings red cherries and some vegetal notes, Pineau d'Aunis provides the high acid freshness, and Côt brings it all back down to earth. Stunning bistro-style wine!
Ravines has been leading the charge for serious Finger Lakes Riesling, and their Dry Riesling is a benchmark for the region. It’s packed with lime peel, green apple, and white peach, all backed by a streak of flinty minerality and racy acidity. This is East Coast Riesling at its best: classy, crisp, and easy to pair with everything from Thai food and oysters to salty snacks and solo sipping. Serve cold, pour freely, and maybe stash a few bottles...because it always disappears too fast.
A light, fruity Vinho Verde that still shows plenty of crisp minerality, this is still miles away from the typical Vinho Verde you see: it’s bone-dry, but has a bit of a spritz. We get notes of apple, lemon, pear and salt, and the wine is so fresh and racy it can be drunk on its own or with delicate fish, poultry or veggies. Ermizio uses both Loureiro (the most typical grape of Vinho Verde), but also Trajadura, or Treixadura, which imparts a creaminess and some tropical fruit flavors. Beat the heat with Vinho Verde!
Folk Machine, White Light, 2024
A riotous blend of 30% Tocai Friulano, 23% Albariño, 21% Verdelho, 21% Vermentino, and 5% Sauvignon Blanc, all organic and hailing from all over the Golden State. With juicy aromatics and flavors of peach, melon, lime, salt and stones, this is a lightly aromatic, super textural wine. Folk Machine is Kenny Likitprakong’s California label, known for laid-back blends and site-driven wines.
Mary Taylor, Beaujolais-Villages Elaboré par Marine Descombe, 2022
Pure Gamay fruit abounds in this Brouilly-style Beaujolais-Villages from one of the great women winemakers in France. Beaujolais is one of the best red wines to drink when it’s hot, both because it’s delicious with a bit of a chill, and because it pairs with all of summer’s greatest hits, food-wise. Flavors of juicy blackberry, currant, and plum are balanced by savory notes of olive and dried porcini. Drink with a burger, white pizza, or grilled chicken, and let yourself be whisked away to a Parisian bistro.
Jurtschitsch is one of Austria's greatest wine estates, and their Grüner Veltliner "Terrassen" is a perfect example of this beloved grape. It's a lighter expression than some Grüners, with flavors of white peach, fresh-cut grass, pepper (black, white, and green), and savory minerality. Grüner Veltliner is a wonderful food companion, and this goes well with light starters but also with heavier main dishes, fish, or cheese. The winery is organic, and there is a strong emphasis on biodiversity around and among the vines.
Antxiola, Getariako Txakolina Blanco, 2024
Antxiola’s Txakolina hails from vineyards near Spain’s rugged Basque coast, where cool Atlantic breezes shape the local Hondarrabi Zuri grape. The 2024 vintage is lightly effervescent, capturing the region’s signature brisk, saline style. Made by the Zudugarai family, who have farmed here for generations, it’s fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness. A lively, thirst-quenching white that pairs beautifully with seafood or pintxos.
Inspired by the winemaking traditions of Northern Italy, where current owner Rudy Marchesi's grandparents hail from, Montinore has sought to produce wines that are a celebration of wine-drinking culture: the simple, deeply pleasurable act of enjoying a well-made wine with a meal or at the end of the the day. Their Pinot Noir is no different: bright red cherry fruit dominates, with a silky texture and an intriguing touch of earthiness.
Channing Daughters, Hamptons Home Farm Vineyard Lagrein Rosato, 2023
Lagrein is an unusual choice for a winery on Long Island — it's native to Südtirol and Alto Adige, far in Italy's Alpine north. It's related to Syrah and Pinot Noir; it carries the former's earthy, meaty tendencies and the latter's pure red fruit flavors. But Channing Daughters isn't your typical LI winery. This is one of New York State's most adventurous, risk-taking addresses, and we love just about everything coming out of their cellar door. This rosé is distinctive and concentrated, with notes of red grapefruit, pink peppercorns, honeydew melon, honeysuckle, plums and salty minerals.
Villa Sparina, Gavi del Comune di Gavi, 2023
In Piedmont, red wines might reign supreme, but the region's white wines should not be ignored! Gavi di Gavi, like Pinot Grigio and Soave, was much beloved in the mid-century, especially by GIs returning from Italy...so beloved that it became something of a commodity item. Now, enterprising vignerons like Villa Sparina are forging a new path, focused on quality and flavor. This iteration is juicy with flavors of pineapple and ripe peach, full-bodied on the palate but with a mineral edge. Drink with poultry, white fish, or salty Italian cheeses.
Field Recordings, Rosé Pet-Nat, 2022
Field Recordings, based in Paso Robles, is one of our favorite sources of super fun, incredibly delicious, and wildly innovative domestic wines. Their vibrant ’22 Rosé Pet-Nat is mostly Cabernet Franc from older vines with a splash of high-acid Chardonnay. A quick 6 hour maceration imparts a rosy color and flavors of strawberries, fresh rosemary sourdough, citrus mint tea, and a playful hint of watermelon Jolly Rancher. This energetic sparkling wine finishes fermentation in the bottle, yielding frothy bubbles and a bone-dry finish.
